University of Phayao is situated in the area of national reserved forest, namely Mae Tum Forest, in Tambon Maeka, Amphur Muang Phayao, Phayao Province. The university, in requesting permission to utilize the area, had followed all the requirements set by the Royal Forest Department, and therefore obtained permission from the Royal Forest Department to use the requested area.
The total campus area is 8,302,744 m², with a total distance/circumference of 21.49 km. The total area on campus covered in forest vegetation is 3,754,341 m² (45.21%), comprising 3,752,024 m² at the Phayao campus (main campus) and 2,317 m² at the Chiang Rai campus.

A Strategy to Increase Green Space within Campus and Surrounding Community
In recent years, tree planting volunteer programs became one of the most popular activities among University of Phayao students and staff. Over 35,000 trees, such as Perennial plants, are planted at surrounding University of Phayao, Phayao campus, and Chiang Rai campus. In addition, more than 23,000 trees are provided to the University of Phayao community to plant at their designated places. This aims to restore the balance and relationship between natural habitats and the community of people under the Green University concept.
